Physical education students at the Drummond Area School District have been participating in the American Heart Association’s (AHA) annual fundraiser since the early 1980’s. In March 2011, seventy-three elementary students in grades 3-6 volunteered to help the fight against heart disease and stroke by getting donations from friends and family. These students set a new school record by raising $9,518.70 for the AHA.
Since the students returned to school this Fall, Mrs. Friermood “Fry” who is the elementary PE teacher and the school’s AHA coordinator, gave her students the news they had been waiting for. For the first time in Drummond’s school history, the 73 heart heroes made the list of the top 100 schools by placing 96th in the Nation for the Hoops for Heart and Jump Rope for Heart combo events. Drummond Elementary School was one of three schools from Wisconsin that made the list.
